Dining room chairs- from drab to fab!
I recently moved into a new house, and I wanted to re-do our dining room. The chairs I had would not fit the vibe, so I sold them and began to hunt for new ones.
I have so much luck on Facebook Marketplace. Why? Because I am constantly scouring and refreshing and changing keywords to try to get as much furniture and home decor to show up as possible. I love the mission. If I’m on the hunt for a piece, I see it as a challenge, and I won’t stop until I find something I can use.
The chairs I found were not cute, at least for what I needed them for. I knew the vibe I wanted for the chair, but I just couldn't find anything currently that had the lines of the chairs I wanted, the color I wanted them, in the price range I could afford. I mean, don’t get me wrong: I wish I could spend thousands on vintage post modern chairs.
I knew these chairs had the potential, and I was ready to get started on the transformation. They were only $20/ each and I got 4. That was a STEAL!
HERE ARE THE CHAIRS BEFORE:
First, I had to take some fine grit sand paper and sand down the chairs so the paint could adhere to them better. They also has some rough patches I needed to smooth out. Once they were as smooth as they could get without me completely sanding them to a twig, I wiped them down with a damp cloth and let them dry.
I used THIS spray paint to paint them. I personally wanted a shiny look to them, but of course, the finish is up to you! I like a shinier finish because I feel like it adds some contrast in photos and reflects the light in my dark room (the dining room is also painted black like my living room).
HERE ARE THE CHAIRS AFTER BEING PAINTED:
They looked SO MUCH BETTER after getting painted. It made them look like totally different chairs, and I knew I was onto something. I love being able to see a vision come to life!
I bought the upholstery fabric off Etsy. It was a closeout fabric, and I got 10 yards for $70. I waited it out and scoured the internets to find a fabric that would work but wasn’t extremely high priced, as most upholstery fabric is. You want a thicker fabric so it holds up over time. I have extra fabric and I’m currently figuring out what I want to do with it. I was so excited to get it in and it was PERFECT!
Anywho, the chair seats and cushions were in terrible shape, so I sent them off to an upholsterer to get reupholstered. They cut new seats, put on the fabric, and got the chairs put back together.
HERE ARE THE CHAIRS AFTER GETTING UPHOLSTERED:
While I didn’t complete this project 100% on my own, I am so proud of how the chairs came out. They looked exactly how I wanted them to and fit in the space so well.
I hope you get the courage to tackle a project on your own (or at least have the vision and execute with some help).
