My Black Living Room

You may ask, how did you end up with a black living room? Is it too dark? Is it TOO MUCH? Do you feel like you’re in a dungeon? Do you ABSOFRICKINTOOTLY LOVE it?

Well, I’m here to answer all those questions and more!

My boyfriend and I just bought a 1940’s stone cottage. The ceilings are 9 feet or so, and the crown moulding is TO DIE FOR. The living room is quite large, and so I thought, why not go BOLD? People thought I was nuts when I told them I was painting the ceiling, walls, and trim all black. Thankfully, my intuition paid off.

While the living room doesn’t have a ton of natural light because of its location, we had the ability to add more ceiling lights to make up the lost sunlight. But honestly, most of the time they’re not needed. The whole point of painting the room black was to have a moody, cigar lounge-esque type of vibe, so I wanted it to be dark. My dad legit said “You know this is going to be dark?” I kind of stared for a moment and said “Well, yea…. it’s black…” LOL

We were working with a tan/salmonish color. I don’t even know how to explain it other than I despised it.

HERE IS THE ROOM BEFORE:

I’m not a gate keeper, so I’ll spill the beans on the color and paint choice. The color is Tricorn Black from Sherwin Williams, but we used PPG Speedhide paint. The walls are eggshell and the trim is a satin finish. Normally, I would go pretty glossy on the trim, but my Uncle, who knows his paint, said that if black is too shiny it can come across plastic-y. Of course, I didn’t want that, so we chose to do satin, and it did NOT disappoint.

HERE IS THE ROOM AFTER:

TA-DA! I know essentially having a bat cave for a living room isn’t appealing to everyone, but at the very least, I’m sure most anyone can rock a black accent wall. I hope I’ve inspired so many people to go bold with their color choices, even if it’s not black! Stay tuned because the dining room will be next.
